Bantwal: A person died while the other suffered severe injuries after the motor bike that they were riding was hit by a sand laden lorry at Jakribettu here on Tuesday night.

The deceased is Santhosh (22), resident of Kannadikatte of Belthangady. Ashwath (21) from Guruvayanakere in Beltangady taluk is undergoing treatment.

The two suffered severe injuries in the mishap and were rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru but after few hours Santhosh died.

The duo was plying from to Guruvayanakere from B C Road when a sand laden truck hit them.

Following the incident raged locals staged a flash protest, stopping sand trucks in the region. They said that restless driving by the sand truck drivers has been causing threats to pedestrians and vehicle users in the region. “Illegal mining of sand is going on unabated in the region and with this the number of lorries too has shot up,” the locals said.

The situation had turned tense for some time. The bike and the lorry have been seized by the police.
