Mangaluru: City Police Commissioner S. Murugan on Tuesday asked all religious centres to install quality Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras for security purposes, at least by the end of this month.

Addressing a press meet in connection with the damage of a prayer centre in Deralakatte by a miscreant, the Commissioner asked all the religious places to install CCTV cameras, which will help in terms of evidence for investigation during any untoward incident.

“The Deputy Commissioner has already asked all the heads of religious centres. We have given certain specifications. Sometimes, the quality of CCTV footage is either poor or resolution is too less. It does not help in any form”, he said asking the institutions to install high end CCTV cameras, which are available for nominal prices.

These CCTV cameras can be of help for more than one reason, the top cop said, giving the example of placing over 300 CCTV cameras during the Hindu Samajotsava in the city. “In terms of traffic related issues, crime, and for law and order purposes, this video footage will be of much help”, he said.

He sought the help of public and religious centres in placing CCTV cameras for security purposes.

Police to install CCTV cameras

Besides, the commissioner said that the department along with Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has initiated the process of installing 20 CCTV cameras in the city. “The project has already been approved and work has to be done on the ground”, he said.

In addition to it, the department has already written to the state government to earmark Rs 2 crore for the installation of over 100 CCTV cameras in the city. The proposal is at various stages, he said adding that the installations of cameras are useful for many purposes.
