Mangaluru: The Second Additional District and Sessions Court convicted a man with 10 years imprisonment and slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him on Monday, September 24, after finding him guilty of rape.
The convict is Krishna P R (23), a resident of Sudikiri Gudde, Sonangeri in Jalsuru village in Sullia taluk. Sources in the district court informed that the accused Krishna got in contact with the victim, who was also a resident of the same village. On September 8, 2015, accused Krishna trespassed into the house of the victim when she was alone at home, promised of marrying her and forced her into sexual intercourse. Despite her resistance, he raped her. When she conceived, he forced her to terminate her pregnancy. Followed by a complaint at Sullia police station, the then circle inspector Sathish S, filed a chargesheet against the accused.
When the case came for hearing at Second Additional District and Sessions Court, Judge Pallavi B R upheld the arguments of Special Public Prosecutor Venkatramana Swamy and convicted the accused with 7 years imprisonment and penalty of Rs 5,000 under CRPC read with IPC Section 376 (Rape) and 10 years of imprisonment and Rs 5,000 penalty under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Section 6. However, both the punishments will run concurrently. If the accused is unable to pay the penalty amount he should undergo an additional six months of imprisonment. Of the penalty amount, Rs 7,500 should be provided to the victim. Meanwhile, the victim is eligible to get compensation from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), the judge ruled.
