Public co-operation helped in restoring peace: SP

Mangaluru: Thanking the public and the police, who worked for the immediate restoration of peace at Uppinangady, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, Sharanappa S.D. said that on Saturday that the police department could resolve communally sensitive issues with the Muslim and Hindu brethren through dialogue in thirty minutes.

Speaking to the reporters here in the city, Mr. Sharanappa said that the police department provided foolproof security in the district, in the wake of ‘Virat Hindu Sangam’ at Puttur. Over 1,200 police personnel were deployed in sensitive places including in Puttur. Although, the entire district was peaceful, some miscreants tried to create communal disturbances in Karaya, which falls under Uppinangady police limits.

“The police team reached to the spot immediately and resolved the issue in thirty minutes. The public too helped in restoring peace in the region”, the SP added. He also warned of strict action against rumor mongers, who are spreading false news about communal clashes.

The top cop said that the department is finding out if the stone pelting on the vehicles and the Masjid had any direct connection to the speeches in ‘Virat Hindu Sangam’.

He further said there is no reason to fear, section 144 has been implemented in Karaya region for two days, while, in other places there is normalcy.

The police have registered three suo moto case on the incident. A pick up vehicle with 24 youth was detained under attempt to riot, for carrying small stones. At least 23 persons including 5 police personnel had suffered minor injuries during the communal clash at Uppinangady, he added.
