Mangaluru: Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil and Health Minister U.T. Khader on Friday studied the pros and cons to start a long-pending Government Medical College here in the city.

Both the ministers held a discussion with hospital Superintendent Dr. Rajeshwari Devi. She told Mr. Patil that the Wenlock hospital currently has over 12 acres of land. In addition to it, the proposal to use eight acres of the adjoining government land (which belongs to the University College) would meet the requirement of 20 acres necessary for a medical college, Mrs. Devi told the ministers.

Mr. Patil sought to know the agreement between the Wenlock Hospital and the Kasturba Medical College (KMC), which is using its resources for their medical students.  The district hospital has 905 beds being used by the college to provide clinical facility to their students, she said.

Later, speaking to the reporters, Mr. Patil said that the Medical Education Department is studying a proposal to start a government medial college.  “The department will study the pros and cons, including the availability of land, which is the primary task”, he said.
