Post-poll violence in Kasaragod leaves one MLA and several others injured; Section 144 in place

Kasaragod: Kanhangad MLA and several others were injured in episodes of violence that took place in Kasaragod close on the heels of the Assembly election results being announced on Thursday, May 19.

Following the incident, prohibitory orders have been slammed in Kasaragod, Manjeshwara and Hosadurga area for seven days. A sense of undeclared bandh has come into place in the entire district as buses remained off road, pushing the people into trouble. Shops and commercial establishments have pulled down the shutters.

It is said that the celebrations of LDF went awry at Mavungala and in the melee MLA E Chandrashekar and several other leaders were injured.

CPI District Committee Member T K Ravi, K V Krishnan and others were also injured. It is said that miscreants pelted stones at the celebrating crowd making way for the violence. Soon after the incident, acts of violence took place in several other places adding to the tension.

The police had to open tear gas and also wield lathi to control the angry mob. Two policemen too have been injured. Security has been stepped up in the region and central security forces have been deputed at strategic points.

The results

The results of the recently held Assembly polls were out on Thursday morning and the LDF bagged three seats in the district while UDF bagged two.

In Manjeshwar P.B. Abdul Razak of Indian union Muslim League (IUML) defeated his nearest rival K.Surendran of BJP by a slender margin of 89 votes.

In Kasargod Town N.A.Nellikunnu of IUML defeated his nearest rival Ravisha Tantri Kuntar of BJP by a margin of 8607 votes.

The rest 3 seats of Udma , Kanhangad and Trikaripur were bagged by  LDF alliance .

In Udma K.Kunhiraman of CPM beat K. Sudhakaran of Congress by 3832 votes.

In Kanhangad E. Chandrashekaran of CPI defeated Dhanya Suresh of Congress by a massive margin of 26011 votes

In Trikaripur M.Rajagopalan of CPM defeated K.P. Kunhikannan of Congress by 16959 votes.

It may be noted that IUML is part of UDF alliance.
