Police arrest man for ‘selling’ Udupi woman in Saudi Arabia

Mangaluru: A man who had allegedly sold a city woman to slavery after luring her with a lucrative job abroad was on Saturday arrested by the Kadri police.

The arrested is James D’Mello (35), a resident of Udupi who happens to be an agent.

James had reportedly got a sum of Rs 25000 from a Mumbai agent, Shaba Khan for faciltating to send Jacintha Mendonca (46), a resident of Mudarangady in Udupi abroad after promising her a job as a nurse in Doha. However, Jacintha had unknowingly been sold as a slave to a person in Saudi Arabia by Khan for Rs 5 lakh last year.

The Ministry of External Affairs is trying to bring Jacintha who is still stranded in Saudi Arabia, back to the country.

Sources in the police said Khan would be arrested soon.
