Udupi: One gets tears while chopping onions, while now one gets tears when knowing the price of onions. Because, the price of one kilogram of onion has reached Rs 60, which was Rs 55 per kilogram in the wholesale market on Sunday.
As per the market sources, the stocks of onions have been exhausted owing to huge demand during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations on Thursday August 8.
The excess monsoon in Maharashtra destroyed the onion crop and the new stocks of onion have not arrived in the market, owing to which the prices have skyrocketed.
The onion was sold at Rs 33 per kilogram in the last week and later sold for Rs 35. The old stock of onion is being sold even now at Rs 35 in several shops.
The onion crop is widely grown in Maharashtra because of dry weather. The excess rains have indeed damaged the crop that has resulted in the price hike, say the traders.
