Mangaluru: The video of a youth stabbing a young girl in full public view in Derlakatte has sent shock waves through the city, but the same video portrays the bravery of a nurse who comes arrives at the scene and immediately defuses the situation.
It can be recalled that a 20-year-old MBA student from Bagambila was stabbed by a youth from Shakthinagar with a kitchen knife on Friday, June 28 evening.
After stabbing the girl, the youth is then seen frantically slitting his own neck multiple times just before the ambulance sirens in.
Even as onlookers (mostly men) stay back and do nothing to prevent the tragic episode from unfurling, it is the daring nurse who comes out of the ambulance within seconds of its arrival and does what was required.
She slowly walks up to the youth, who is still brandishing the knife, says something to convince him and within seconds, the youth lays next to the girl whom he had just stabbed and that is when the onlookers and other personnel in the ambulance take control of the situation.
Most people who have watched the video are all praises for the bravery of the nurse who placed her duty and responsibility before her own safety.
This she does even as onlookers warn her against going out and confronting the youth.
Now, the question on everyone’s minds is “who is the nurse?”
As she wished to remain unnoticed, on condition of anonymity, the young lady told newskarnataka.com that she works for K S Hegde Medical Academy.
“I did what I was supposed to do. I did what I felt was right,” the nurse said, adding that it was her duty to rescue others when they are in danger and she did her duty without expecting anything, not even publicity and appreciation.
Speaking to newskarnataka.com, the victim’s father said that he would always remain indebted to the nurse for what she did.
“I wish someone had the courage to do what she did, way before the youth stabbed my daughter. I wish someone had pelted stones or done something to stop him and help my child escape,” he said with tears in his eyes.
It is said that the 28-year-old youth from Shakthinagar, who is a dance teacher by profession, expressed his love to the girl many times and that she had rejected his proposal. His constant proposals soon affected their friendship.
It is also alleged that the youth had attempted and failed to kidnap the girl four months ago. A complaint was lodged with the Karkala police station in this regard. When the family thought that the youth had mended his ways after going to jail, he got busy plotting the girl’s murder after his release and Friday’s episode was the fruit of his revenge scheme.
Currently, the young woman is said to be critical.
