No power projects required for Karavali, say experts

Mangalore:The Coastal Region of Karnataka can not sustain any major power projects and there is no need to implement them too, the experts Mr. N Madhyastha and Mr. YB Ramakrishna said in the awareness program organized  by Nagarika Seva Trust in the NGO hall, Mangalore.

The awareness program was organized as a part of “Save  the culture ,environment, agriculture of coastal karnataka” campaign.

Environmentalist Mr. N Madhyastha spoke on the topic “the boons and the banes of the Nethravathi diversion project”.

Mr. Madhyastha said that diversion of river Nethravathi at Ettinahole will not only have adverse affect on the aquatic creatures of the surrounding and will lead to the decrease in the availability of sweet water to the sea ceatures. Which will result in the increase in the salt level in the sea and thus facing the consequences of the dead sea.

He also stressed on the affects of  de-forestation for the project. Since the western ghat is the habitat of rare species in the world. Hence by implementation of the project will result to consequences similar to Uttarkhand tragedy.

Consultant of ICRAF, UNO, Mr. YB Ramakrishna was speaking on the topic “Is there any requirement of major power projects for the generation of electricity?”

Mr. Ramakrishna quoting the various reports of the central government said that there is no need of the major power projects like Niddodi project, if we are able to reduce the transmission loss and increase the efficiency of electrical equipments in the Karnataka Transmission Network and give more focus on the production of electricity using the  renewable resources.

Mr. Ramakrishna explained about the different sources of renewable resources which can fulfill the needs of electricity in the future.

Earlier the resource persons including director of Manipal school of communication, Mr. Varadesh Hiregange inaugurated the program.

President of Nagarika seva trust, K Somanath Nayak, President of DK Environmentists forum association, Umesh Nirmal, President of Agriculturists forum Vitthan Shetty, conveiners of Nagarika Seva trust Vidya Nayak, Prabhakar Inna were present at the occasion.
