Mangaluru: As the second-year batch of various paramedical courses at Government Wenlock Hospital has not begun yet, students organised a huge protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday, November 21.

The protest was organised under the aegis of Students Federation of India (SFI). The students alleged that though the classes have not begun, the students have been asked to come to Hospital every day and they are forced to take up work like cleaning, sweeping etc.
Addressing the protesters SFI district president Charan Shetty informed that students were enrolled to the paramedical course under government quota and most of the students hail from poor economic background.

“As there were no proper facilities in the Wenlock Hospital, the first year students of paramedical courses were asked to go to classes at a private hospital in the city. However, the private hospital refused to conduct classes for the second year batch students citing space constrains as a reason. The students have been left in lurch as the academic year commenced three months ago and their classes hav3 not started yet“, he said.

CITU district secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal alleged that district medical officer Dr. Rajeshwaridevi shows no concern over the problems of paramedical students. “If there are no proper facilities why did the DMO approve to start the course at the hospital. It is now said that the hospital did not even have proper teaching staff to start the course,” he said and warned of intensifying the protests if the classes are not started at the earliest.

SFI district secretary Madhuri Bolar, city secretary Mayuri Bolar, paramedical students like Reshma, Dhanush, Amal George among others were present.
