NK impact: ZP initiates measures to clear garbage dumped in Maravoor dam

Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has taken all appropriate measures to clear the waste dumped in the Maravoor vented dam, finally.

It may be recalled that newskarnataka.com had exposed the uncivilised practice of dumping waste in the Maravoor dam in a special report under the title, ‘Waste disposal in Maravoor vented dam pollutes Phalguni river’, two days ago. The report had also urged with the district administration to take appropriate action in this regard.

Responding to the article, the DK ZP has already taken measures to clear the garbage. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Dr. Selvamani R when contacted told newskarnataka.com that measures had already been taken to clear the waste from the dam. Meanwhile, he admitted that the downstream of Maravoor dam was still polluted and assured of measures to clear it.

The Maravoor vented dam was constructed at a cost of Rs 42.5 Lakh to meet the drinking water needs of the people in 14 villages including Bajpe, Jokatte, Maravoor, Kenjar, Moodushedde among others. Around 1.25 million cubic metres of water stored in this dam and the same is being treated at a plant near the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA).
