NIT-K student drowns at Suratkal beach

Mangalore :A student from NIT-K drowned in the sea near NITK beach in suratkal during high tide here on Tuesday May 6.

The victim has been identified as Shashank Srivastava (23), resident of Singapura layout, Vidyaranyapura, Bangalore and final year B.Tech Civil Engineering) student from NIT-K .

He along with his nine friends had gone to suratkal beach after writing the final examinations.Police said Shashank, Kuru Yadav and Nikhil, all from the same batch, were wading in knee-deep waters when a large wave engulfed them and dragged them into the sea. While Yadav and Nikhil were caught by their friends along with them, Shashank could not be rescued.

Locals said that Shashank had tried to latch on to the nets placed by fishermen a few meters away from the shore but could not hold on to it. By the time the lifeguards from Panambur beach, about seven kms away from the spot, arrived on the scene, Shashank had drowned.

Police said the victim’s kin have been informed. The body has been kept at the Government District Wenlock Hospital morgue.
