Niddodi villagers say thermal project will not be allowed

Moodbidri : Niddodi, a small village in Moodbidri, has decided to take up cudgels against the proposed 4000 mw ultra mega thermal power plant. A protest meeting held at Bangerapadavu on May 26, Thursday, reaffirmed the decision of the villagers to fight the project tooth and nail. The protest meet was organised by the Matra Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi which is in the lead in the fight against the proposed project.

Speaking on the occasion, Premanand Kalmady, environmental activist from Udupi, took the officials to task for keeping the villagers in the dark regarding the proposed project. He also wanted to know why a public hearing was not conducted prior to announcing the project. Kalmady also strongly favoured a discussion on the pros and cons of the proposed project. Niddodi may be rendered barren if the project is allowed, he cautioned and urged the villagers not to bow before any pressure and sell off their lands.

Kiran Manjanbailu, President of Matrabhoomi Samrakshana Samithi,Yadava Shetty, District Secretary of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, Rohitaksha, State Vice President of the Sangha, Joachim Koreya, President of Kallamundkur Gram Panchayat and several villagers participated in the protest.
