Mangaluru: National Commission for Women (NCW) member Shyamala Kunder, on Tuesday, February 11, met an acid victim at Wenlock Hospital in the city and condemned the negligence and inhuman attitude of the police officials.

After visiting the hospital, she told reporters that the NCW has filed a suo moto case in connection with the acid attack. Meanwhile, she instructed the department of Women and Children to provide all the help that the victim requires, including education for her three daughters.

“I have assured the victim that the NCW will stand with her. When she was attacked with acid by her relative, she called the police as she was unable to bear the pain. However, she was forced to walk around three kilometres to reach the hospital, as the police did not respond properly. The police could have sent the victim to the hospital and then taken her complaint. They did not do that and they behaved inhumanly,” she said.

Shyamala also informed that she has asked the Superintendent of Police for a speedy investigation and also to take action against the police officials who did not carry out their duties properly. “I won’t keep quiet, but will do a follow up until victim receives justice,” she said.

It can be recalled that a 35-year old-widow, having three daughters, was attacked by her brother-in-law and admitted to the government Wenlock Hospital with severe burns a few days ago. Her daughter, who suffered minor injuries, was also hospitalised. It was alleged that the Kadaba police did not respond to the complaint properly. Later, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police B M Lakshmi Prasad suspended the ASI of the Kadaba police station for dereliction of duty.
