Namma Neeru launched against water privatisation

Mangalore: A  People’s campaign for Right to Water named  ‘Namma Neeru’ aimed at pressurising the government to  stop water privatisation,  was flagged off   on January  13, Monday. The campaign was simultaneously launched in  Mangalore, Belgaum, Gulbarga,   Mysore, Bellary and Hubli districts.

Freedom fighter H S Doreswamy flagged off the initiative and said privatization of water is against the Indian Constitution and the principle of social justice.

The protestors demanded the cancellation of licenses given to private companies selling bottled water, and insisted  that a law aimed at providing water security to all residents of the State, be enacted.

Moreover they also insisted to provide free lifeline water of 135 litres per person per day, strengthen public water institutions such as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), Vani Vilas Water Works (Mysore) among others.

The members of the organisation will collect over one lakh signatures from the people across the State and present it to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Water Rights’ Convention meeting to be held in the second week of February.
