MLC Ivan alerts state govt on shortage of police personnel

Mangaluru: Presenting the work  he has done in the recently concluded assembly sessions, MLC Ivan D’Souza said he had succeeded in availing maximum time allotted to a representative in the house asking as many as 45 pertinent questions in the interest of coastal district.

Both the houses, upper and lower, give opportunity to ask 5 queries a day to a representative. However, Ivan said that in nine long days’ business of the upper house, he had posed 45 questions to which he received answers from the government. He was briefing about the same during a press meet on Monday morning at his office located at Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).

Shortage of police personnel in the district

The MLC raised the unresolved problem of a manpower crunch in the police force, for which the government had assured of deploying more policemen and women, in addition to setting up of new police stations in the district. The government has so far did not complied with the general rule of deploying 250 personnel per 1 lakh people. He sadi, “The government assured me of increasing the numbers in the days to come.”

The government in a written reply to the MLC, admitted the shortage of the police force in the district, which has seen 37 communal incidents in 2015 alone. The government said currently DK suffering with a low police populaton ration of 61 police personnel to 1 lakh people. “The state had sent a proposal to the union government on 3/6/2014 to install a Rapid Action Force Battalion of te Central Reserve Police Force in Mangaluru, and the proposal is pending with the central government.”

The government in its answer also said, it would set up a police outpost in the Puttur Rural jurisdiction, a Bantwal police sub-division in DK District Police Unit, a traffic police station at Bantwal Taluk, upgrade the Dharmasthala police outpost to a full-fledged police station and put up an outpost in the Bantwal Rural jusispridition.

Making education effective

Apart from this, the government had taken swift actions to allow M.com graduates, who,  during their degree (graduation) pursued BBM to teach in the colleges. Earlier, Ivan conveyed, BBM graduates were barred from taking up teaching as their profession. “After I moved the issue in the assembly, the government with immediate effect passed the orders to allow the post graduates to be employed in the colleges.

He also sent a proposal to the state education ministry to start evening diploma college at KPT (Karnataka Polytechnic College) to facilitate diploma education and get jobs to ITI holders. “Sandhya, an evening college is under consideration. At present, there are only two evening colleges in the state, one in Bengaluru and other in Mysuru.” He asked questions in connection with this during zero hour.

He informed the press that after he assumed MLC post he managed to get Rs: 64,00,500 to be released from the Chief Minister Relief Fund. He handed over relief fund to two beneficiaries, Thomas Menazes and Alex during the press meet today. He also released a booklet of the key questions asked in the upper house during the press meet.
