Mangaluru: Situation continues to remain tense in Bantwal region as the body of RSS worker Sharath was taken in a procession from Mangaluru to his hometown in Sajipamunnur.
Stones as well as soda bottles were pelted at the police deployed in the region to maintain security here at Kaikamba, BC Road as the procession passed through the area injuring one person. Some vehicles were damaged and glass panes of an ATM outlet too was shattered in this incident.
The police, it is gathered, resorted to lathicharge to control the situation. Shops in the area have remain shut in fear of tensions.
Speaking to media persons IGP Harishekaran, who visited the spot, said that violence erupted as the procession was passing through the Kaikamba area. “We will never allow law and order to go out of hand. Around 1000 police personnel have been deployed in the area. We are also working towards evoking Goonda act against the communal elements in the district,” he added.
Miscreants also tragetted media persons during the funeral procession enroute Sajipamunnur. They resorted to pelting stones and soda bottles from a building complex, it is gathered.
