Mangaluru: Mayor Kavitha Sanil has vowed to initiate action against illegal constructions and parking space encroachments provided all the 60 corporators cooperate with her in the drive.
The issue was raised by Congress corporator A C Vinayaraj at a council meeting held at Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on June 29.
Kavitha said she was ready to act against parking place conversions in private buildings as well and appealed that none of corporators should create hurdles.
Corporator Vinayaraj threw light on the issue citing that the MCC officials had been allotting temporary door numbers to illegal constructions as well. Stating that no action was being taken against illegal buildings in the city or conversion of parking places in many areas into commercial spaces despite MCC officials being aware of that, he demanded that the licence of such buildings be cancelled.
Mahabala Marla, former Mayor and Congress corporator suggested that the the government be prevailed upon to appoint a designated officer to act against such illegal buildings.
Corporator from Opposition BJP Premanand Shetty also concurred with the idea and urged the city corporation to act without further delay.
Responding to the demand, Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said the action was already in progress against encroachments of parking places. Stating that all the ‘No Parking’ boards put up by private builders in front of their buildings in the city had been cleared he apprised the meeting of the need of police and public support to execute the drive against encroachments.
