In his welcome address Dr Dilip Naik said, “In the last two decades, there has been an explosion in the development of new technologies, instruments, and materials in dentistry. These advances have enabled clinicians to complete procedures that were once considered impossible or that could be performed only by talented or lucky clinicians. The most important revolution has been the introduction and widespread adoption of the ‘Operating Microscope’ (OM) which has revolutionized dentistry, especially endodontic practice worldwide”.

“MCODS Mangaluru has recently procured the latest model of Zeiss, S 100/ OPMI Pico surgical dental microscope with integrated HD camera for documentation for both patient care and education with the supported infrastructural grant by VGST, Karnataka state Govt. under K-Fist Level-1. Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangaluru is the first institute among the dental colleges in the country to procure this latest model of Carl Zeiss surgical microscope which is having the best optics and illumination to visualize details and fine structures at ease. This microscope will help in giving the precise dental treatment for the patient and also helps in solving patient’s problems happening during therapy” added Dr Dilip.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Poornima Baliga spoke on role of MAHE, Manipal and its contribution towards improving the medical/dental education by providing best education, best infrastructure and best faculty. She also said, “Just like a woman goes to a jewellery shop and buys her favorite jewellery similarly is the case here, where MCODS-Mangaluru got what they wanted. This new equipment will go a long way in providing the best knowledge and training that they need, to make them professionals when they go out anywhere in the world. In a competitive world, latest equipment, knowledge and training is essential. And just like Dr Kundabala had mentioned that through this Microscope you can even see heaven, but I hope it won’t make patient see heaven? In any institution three factors are essential, namely infrastructure, faculty and facilities, and MCODS-Mangaluru has all three of them which is attracting students, and that’s what has made MCODS a great college”.

Dr Surendra Shetty said, “MCODS which has already reached greater heights, has now leaped more higher by installing this Dental Surgical Microscope. Upgradation is a sign of growth of any institution. MAHE has provided all the facilities, infrastructure, faculties and better technology that is need in the medical field. Among the present 14 dental colleges in India, MCODS was the first one to launch. Dental education decades ago was not so high tech as it is now. Those days not many wanted to take up dentistry, but now due to sophisticated equipment, facilities etc students are all eager to take up dentistry. Today Indian dentistry has reached the standards of international level, and we should be proud of it, and MCODS is one among the colleges that has earned the pride.”

Dr Y Bharath Shetty addressing the gathering and announcing that Government of Karnataka and DCI is working on improving the status of dental colleges and job opportunities for dentists who are coming out of these dental colleges said, “I have great respect for MCODS for producing better students who go out and serve the world in the dentistry field. Science is the truth of the moment, because changes can happen any time. Today it may be truth, and tomorrow it may turn out to be false. MAHE is doing yeomen service in the field of medicine and also caring for its students. As a member of Dental Council, as admission is concerned, we need better infrastructure, improved facilities and knowledgeable faculty. We don’t need institutions which lack all these three factors. I am happy that MCODS has all the factors needed to make a student a better professional.”

Dr. Y. Bharath Shetty was felicitated during the occasion for his contribution towards improving dental education in the country. Dr. Neeta Shetty proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Ashwini Desai-Final Year PG Dental student compered the programme. The program was attended by dignitaries from KMC Mangaluru, MCODS Mangaluru and other institutes.

Following is the briefing about the ‘Dental Surgical Microscope’ by Dr Kundabala Shenoy, Professor, Dept of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, MCODS:

“Today we inaugurated the dental surgical microscope clinic with our 3rd and latest microscope. Let me tell you how we procured this state of the art microscope. It all started about four years ago when my colleagues in Dept. of PHD, Dr. Ramya Shenoy got me to apply for a research and infrastructural improvement fund from Vision Group of Science and Technology, Govt. Of Karnataka. We both applied for grants and both of us were fortunate enough to be awarded grants. So I wish to profusely thank her. My project was on dental education and we bought lot of equipment under this grant and submitted a good project which convinced VGST to award us the 2nd grant. When I told the VGST officials the money is not enough to buy my dream instrument, they suggested to go for University support. When I put forward this to our Dean, he was enthusiastic and laid the ground work at the university prior to my meeting with our Vice Chancellor. When I went to meet our vice chancellor, Dr. Vinod Bhat, he immediately sanctioned the necessary additional fund. That’s how we got this 3rd and the best microscope for the department.”

“We planned to buy the latest highly compact Carl Zeiss dental S 100 Pico surgical microscope with all the accessories, so that it will help in documentation, communication, education, patient care and research. Our institution is the first one among the dental colleges of India to buy this latest, sleek, model easy to operate, easy to maintain, with best optics, integrated high quality HD video camera showing with real life pictures. OPMI Pico with its apochromatic coatings makes details and fine structures clearly visible, high contrast, true color images. Camera has 5 phase changer, added adapter for assistant observation, can be connected to monitor for easy observation of surgery by students.”

“With best optics, Carl Zeiss gives best quality visualization of operating site. Best ergonomics, excellent illumination with xenon, halogen and LED light, if you look through Carl Zeiss microscope, operator can see heaven with ease. It helps to do the skilled work with highest precision. We are lucky to procure this tool which will help us in our day to day patient care, research and patient and student education. On behalf of Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics and MCODS, Mangaluru, I profusely thank VGST, Govt of Karnataka and MAHE Manipal” .
