Mangaluru varsity hopes to construct stadium, swimming pool

Mangaluru: Riding over success of physical education students in various sports competitions across the state and outside, Prof. Byrappa K, Vice Chancellor of Mangaluru University on Thursday said that the varsity has written a proposal to the University Grant Commission (UGC) to sanction Rs 25 crore for the development of sports facilities.

Speaking to the presspersons here in the city, Prof. Byrappa said that the university has written a letter of proposal to the UGC. “If the fund is granted, the university will use the entire amount for the benefit of sports, mainly infrastructure development”, he said. The University is planning to construct an outdoor stadium, swimming pool and an indoor stadium are some of the projects to be undertaken with the fund, he added.

He also said that the UGC has already sanctioned Rs 2.40 crore, which will be used for fitness training centre, physiotherapy lab and recruit a physiotherapist, he added.

Sports policy

In the University level, there are at least 27 sports competitions being held every year. However, the university used to follow ‘Sports Policy’, which was framed in 1982. As of now, each game has undergone a lot of changes, which is missing in the existing sports policy. Hence, the University has appointed 40-member committee to frame another comprehensive ‘sports policy’, which will work as a guide to conduct sports competitions.

In addition to it, the Vice-Chancellor also said that the university is planning add a separate quota for sports as an eligibility criterion to apply for doctorate degree. This quota will remain separate from the already existing NCC, NSS and other quotas, he added.

Felicitation Function

On March 25, Mangaluru University will hold a felicitation function for the prize winners of inter-university sports and cultural competitions and inter-collegiate sports champions for the year 2014-15. According to the invitation, Prof. Yashovarma B., principal of SDM College, Ujire and Sahana Kumari, Olymian will attend the function.
