Mangalore: Technology based ‘M-Track II’ system will be set up in the city to regulate traffic movement within six months, said Uday Nayak, Assistant Commissioner of Police.

He was addressing the students at the programs organized by Sri Ramakrishna College in association with Lions Club International and Mangalore City Police on ‘Prevention of Crimes and Traffic Awareness’, here in the city on Saturday, September 6.

The traffic is heavy but there is shortage of Traffic police personnel. Therefore, we have sent a proposal to the state government to sanction ‘M-Track II’ system in Mangalore. Under the project, the city will receive Rs. 25 crore over a five year duration for traffic management.  Presently, there are 14 signals in the city. The funds will be used to renovate signals, set up technology based control rooms and surveillance at all signals to monitor traffic, he said.

This system will help as the city is facing heavy traffic with the increase of vehicles. In total, four lakh vehicles have been registered in the city, he said.

In addition, the vehicles are parked on the road due to lack of space and there are no proper footpaths as well. Ultimately, the burden falls on the shoulders of a traffic police, he added.

Asking people to use the right side of the road, ACP said that the old practice of walking on the left side of the road has  changed now. It’s not safe as we cannot see the vehicle passing us. But, a person who walks on the right side of the road gets to see the vehicles approaching in front of him/her, ACP said presenting cases of vehicles hitting the passengers.

Giving statistics of vehicle accidents, he said that among the 37 accidents reported this year, 36 persons claimed their life. Among those who lost their lives, all were youngsters, he said. Cautioning about rash driving, he said that it may thrill you for some time, but remember, it kills you, he said.

Uday Nayak also asked the public  to co-operate with the traffic and follow discipline.

Krishna Prasad Rai, convener of the college and Manjunath Murthy, governor of Lion’s Club also spoke on the occasion. Naveen Shetty K., principal of Sri Ramakrishna College welcomed the gathering. He said that students of nearly 50 colleges are taking part in the program.
