Kasargod: A  man who had raped his five-year-old niece has been sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000.

The Kasargod District and Sessions Court gave the verdict on Tuesday December 17.

The accused 40-year-old Maruthi who hailed from Davangere, was staying in Kanhangad in a rented house where the incident had occurred on April 17, 2013.

He raped the daughter of his sister who was just a five-year-old child. The child which fell sick had to be later admitted to the Kanhangad district hospital.

When the doctors confirmed   rape, her parents registered a case at Hosadurga police station.

Soon the culprit went absconding but was later caught by the police on April 29.
