Mangalore: A man who has been convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by the Second Sessions Court on Wednesday December 4. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000.
The minor Dalit girl was raped by 27-year-old Dinesh Amin, a resident of Pade Peroor Chavandipalke house at Bajpe on June 24, 2011. The main accused 33-year-old Manoj B Shetty, a resident of Kinnipadavu, is said to be absconding.
Manoj Shetty, who works as an auto rickshaw driver, had kidnapped the girl in his rickshaw when she was going to school, took her to his rented house at Kaudur Padavu, and raped her. He then called Dinesh Amin to his house and he too raped her.
The complaint lodged at Bajpe police station stated that the duo threatened to kill her if she revealed the incident. The police were later successful in arresting them.
Puttamadaiah, the then ACP of Panambur had filed a charge sheet against the duo in the court.The main accused Manoj Shetty who could get a bail from the High Court failed to appear in the court in the final stages of the hearing and went absconding.
Out of the Rs 10,000 fine imposed on Dinesh, he has to pay Rs 8,000 to the victim, and failing to do so would attract another six months in prison. The verdict was pronounced by judge Uma M G. The public prosecutor was C Venkataramanaswamy.
