Udupi:  A young woman who was reportedly kept under house arrest by her family members  in their house at Innanje near Kaup  has been rescued by locals along with the police on September 18, Wednesday.

The young woman has been admitted to the Ajjarkad Government Hospital. According to locals, she was locked up in a room in the house and tortured  by her brother Nityananda and his wife Bhavani since the past three to four years.

Meanwhile, residents of the neighbourhood said  the family did not allow the girl to come outside and  had even made her starve.

On Wednesday, around 30 locals along with the police raided the house  and rescued the young woman. However, her brother argued that his sister was mentally ill and had confined herself to her room.

Investigations are underway.
