Mangaluru: Residents headed by the local wing of Democratic Youth Federation of India of Kasaba Bengre on Monday evening disrupted ongoing work of erection of compound wall of the Golf Club and luxury resort here.

It may be recalled here, that the DYFI staged a protest in front of the DC’s  office on May 13 seeking stoppage of mammoth project. The DYFI alleged that the company, The Opus Laguna Golf and Resorts Pvt Ltd flouted law in order to get the project under Public Private Partnership. The residents, were apprehensive that the golf club would end their long and emotional bondage with the sea.

On Monday, June 1, as many as 150 residents, spearheaded by local city DYFI leader Santosh Bajal, thronged the location at which construction work was going on at around 3.30 pm, and stalled the erection of a protection wall for the yet to come up golf club. The state president of DYFI said “We will carry forward the cause, if the project is not binned.”

Residents expressed the view, that most of the dwellers in Bengere are fishermen and setting up of club and resort would derail their future fishing prospects.

The locals were also unhappy with the District Administration as no leaders of DYFI were called for the  meeting held in this connection ten days ago.
