Mangaluru: Narayanaguru Vichara Kammata, distirct-level workshop Mangaluru organised to observe 163rd birth anniversary of social reformer Bhramashree Narayana Guru was inaugurated by CM’s media advisor Dinesh Amin Mattu at St Aloysius College on Sunday.

With the topic of the workshop being ‘Yuvajanara Guru Matthu Guri’, Mattu said that lack of efficient Guru has left the present generation confused. “Today, Dakshina Kannada is threatened by various issues like unemployment, superstition, alcoholism, gambling, cannibalism and arious other problems. It is disheartening that people who motivate our youth to indulge into various activities flaunting saffron shawls and Kumkum tilaks on forehead are not trying to fight these evils,” he said adding that in absence of an effective Guru like Narayana Guru, the elders in the families must take the onus of guiding the younger ones on right path.

He opined that Narayana Guru is relevant today because he was someone who fought against everything that was hampering progress of the society. “From blind beliefs to inequality, from unemployment to alcoholism, Narayana Guru brought about social reformation specifically involving the youth, ” he said declaring that Kerala became what it is today because people responded to the call that Narayana Guru gave.

“Narayana Guru was a Hindu saint whose fight was not against the Hindus and the Muslims. His fight was against superstition and evils that existed within the religion. His reforms were more of social in nature than being religious,” said Mattu adding that religion is a glue that binds people together.

Talking in context of communal unrest in Dakshina Kannada district, he said that social fabric of the district changed over two decades and now each individual must silently ponder about the ones who have gained from the hatred between the Hindus and the Muslims. “Let us fight out the social evils and not the religions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mattu praised veteran Congress leader Janardhan Poojary and said that he is a leader who can lead the society in path of progress through principles of Narayana Guru.
