Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts’ Kambala committees are likely to meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday and urge him to re-notify the order that would permit them to organise Kambala with certain conditions.
According to sources, Udupi district in-charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai would put forth the requests of the committees and discuss the issue with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Law Minister TB Jayachandra and Animal Husbandry Minister A Manju. They would request the government to re-notify the December 2015 order that permitted Kambala with certain conditions, but one that was withdrawn later.
The Kambala has been a traditional fest of the coastal Karnataka region usually held between November-March and the buffaloes made to run in paddy fields filled with slush and water. The contest generally takes place between two pairs of buffaloes, each pair raced in wet rice fields, controlled by a whip-lashing farmer. Rewards are presented to the winners.
