Mangaluru: A new controversy has raised its head after a video of RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat comparing Ullal to Pakistan surfaced and went viral.
The video is of an event -‘Grama Vikasa Saptaaha’ – in Dakshina Kannada’s Kinya village on Sunday, where Bhat is heard saying that the number of Hindus in and around Kinya has reduced.
“I don’t have to speak about Ullal. So then who will protect our temples and who will protect our traditions? Why was there a Pakistan? Our numbers reduced and their numbers increased and that is why we got Pakistan and Bangladesh. If you go to Ullal pete (pete means town), isn’t it Pakistan? Is it any different? Near home itself, a Pakistan has been built,” he added, according to a report by TNM.
According to a report by DH, Bhat asked the gathering who will “safeguard our temples and daivasthana” if “we (Hindus) are outnumbered”. “Who will protect our tradition and culture?” he added.
He then urged the Hindus to have more children saying, “When there are more children in a house, it brings happiness.”
Responding to Bhat’s speech, Congress leader and Mangaluru MLA U T Khader said,” The way Bhat brings up Pakistan every now and then will make you wonder if Mohammed Jinnah is his guru. He seems to red more of Pakistan’s history than of India.”
For those who want to poison society, Pakistan is a popular topic, he said, adding, “I can only see India in every corner of Ullal.”
According to the 2011 census, 56.1% of the residents in Ullal are Muslim while 34.8% residents are Hindus. Christains account for 9.34% of the residents.
Reminding of the time when Rani Abbakka, a 16th century Tuluva queen of Ullal, fought and drove away the Portugese, Khader said that at that time, Hindus, Muslims and Christians fought together. “The religious centres of those times still exist and the traditions of that time are still respected. I want to see words that will strengthen the culture and goodwill of Ullal,” he added.
