Kasargaod: Our Indian sportsmen work very hard to bring laurels to the country in their own sport. Many come home victorious with medals and trophies and they are often welcomed with a lot of noise and fanfare. But, when the fanfare comes to rest and when the noise had faded off, what remains with these sportsmen is the haunting silence of unchanging reality of their personal lives. We have to agree and there is no escaping from the fact that most of our sportsmen come from humble background and climb up the success ladder facing several impediments and hurdles that their financial position often pose.

Yashmitha from Badiyadka is yet another glaring example for the same. She has been a part of the national throwball team that represented India in the throwball tourney recently held in Kuala Lumpur. She is one of the most respected sports persons of the region, but if one looks into her personal life, it is not as bright and glittery as her professional side.

Without even a house to live in, the tale of this Asian Throwball champion is grim.

Hailing from a small village of Kumbdaje Bellur’s Mithmajalu Yashmitha may have reached places because of her game, but the family still lives in her uncle’s house as they do not have a house of their own.

The family has also applied for some financial help from the gram panchayat but nothing seems to have worked for them.

Her father Subanna is a coolie worker. What he earns is not sufficient for the family to make its both ends meet. Even in this plight Yashmitha has worked very hard to reach where she had reached. She is seen practicing at the local village school ground with complete honesty. Without any laudable training and coaching, the young lady has aimed to the skies and is also climbing up the success ladder, but the government has not yet decided to open its eyes to see the pangs of the lady who is holding the national flag high.

The locals say that with help of some donors, school teachers, students, relatives and bank loans, Yashmitha made it to the recent international competition. The fee to participate in the championship was Rs 60,000 and only Rs 32,000 was pooled. The girl had to purchase even the jersey on her own.

However, recently the local MLA has said that the needs of the family would be brought to the notice of the sports minister and all efforts would be made to provide them with basic facilities.

One may have to wait and watch if these assurances would materialise or remain to be only promises.
