Mangaluru: Two shops were raided here on Tuesday by a police team led by assistant police commissioner (ACP) Udaya Naik and Bunder police inspector Shantharam in connection with issuing of illegal SIM cards.A shop named Crown on Balmatta road and a company in Urwa which was involved in outsouring work of processing documents for SIM cards were raided and the police have seized some of the important documents for the investigation.
The raid was carried out in relation to cases of illegal use of SIM cards by undertrials. According to reports, an accused in RTI activist Vinayaka Baliga murder case was using a SIM card originally belonging to a person named Kareem who died in May 2015. But the SIM card was issued five months after his death. In another case, an accused in recent murder of Charan in Vamanjoor was using a SIM card belonging to one Cleven Philip without his knowledge.
It is yet to be ascertained whether these two shops had any role in issuing illegal SIM cards which were used for illegal activities by the undertrials. Few days back several SIM cards were seized from Mangaluru central jail.
