Mangaluru: Following the twin murder in the district sub-jail, ADGP and IGP (prisons) Kamal Pant on Tuesday, November 3, visited the jail and held a detailed enquiry.

Speaking to reporters later, he said that he had already held discussions with the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan, other police, jail officials, staff and inmates and that another round of discussion will be held with the Commissioner. Pant informed that Mysuru jail superintendent Anand Reddy has also been asked to probe the case.
On being asked as to why notorious criminals were being lodged in the old jail building, he said that there was groupism among inmates. Hence, the prisoners were bifurcated to avoid clashes. He added that there was no gang war since five months in the jail premises. Speaking further, he said that as the new building can accommodate only 200 inmates and the number of prisoners was 400, the rest were housed in the old prison until infrastructure is developed.
Jail staff involved: Inmate
Meanwhile, an under-trial named Faizal, who was being taken to the court, told reporters that the jail staff had abetted the murders. He stated that a staff named Chakresh had supplied a knife covered in a blue pack to the accused, the previous night of the murder. He also said that two other staff, Rajendra and Puttanna opened the cell of the accused first on the day of the clash. The accused, according to Faizal, would generally be opened after leaving out a few inmates.
Responding to this, Pant said, “If any official or jail staff is found to be involved, strict action will be taken he will be made an accused in the murder case.
Asked if the incident had any communal motive Pant said that it was too soon to comment.
