Mangaluru: The recent spate of irrational murders has left the district in a state of shock. The killings, which got a communal colour after few persons decided to avenge the murder of a Hindu youth with the blood of a Muslim man left many wondering if Dakshina Kannada is no more a peace-loving district where people resided in religious harmony.
However, the scene is much beyond that for some people who turn blood thirsty and the opposite for few others who raise as Samaritans and reinstate our otherwise deteriorating faith in humanity. No need to mention that it was a Muslim guy Majeed who rushed to the rescue of murdered Deepak Rao and two Hindu youth Rohith and Shekhar who rushed a bleeding Basheer to the hospital.
So the question arises, even though Hindu-Muslims may be divided by faith, are we united with a common thread of love, togetherness? But of course we are and there are many instances to prove the same. One such shining example of Hindu-Muslim unity was witnessed when people from both community came forth to build a temporary boat bridge for the Urus programme to be performed at the dargah of the Rahmania mosque at Nadupalli near Adyar-Kannur, about 10 km from the city.
The event, held on January 6 and 7 did not see any religious barriers and people from all religions were seen offering their prayers here at this age-old Dargah, which is said to have gotten submerged in the waters back in 1923, due to a flood-like situation.
Earlier, people used to reach this place by a boat itself and even at that time the boatman, irrespective of his religion would offer a free ride to the pilgrims. However , since several people experience anxiety during a boat travel, a boat bridge is constructed here from last three years. Nearly 67 boats, many of which belonged to Hindus, were kept side-to-side and iron boards kept atop it, thus making a pathway for people to reach the Dargah by foot. The bridge was constructed on Friday since the programme was too be held on Saturday and Sunday and it is gathered that Hindu persons have offered their boats voluntarily without charging a dime for the two-day mosque event.
The Mosque secretary, Iqbal Ahmed too offered safe journey wishes to all the Sabrimala pilgrims here.
In conclusion, we can just say attempts to create rifts between people will not see success till humanity strives within us!!
