Heavy downpour predicted on Fri, Sat; Schools to remain closed

Mangaluru: The meteorological department has sounded an alert that the coastal district of Karnataka is likely to witness heavy downpour today (Friday) and on Saturday, June 9.

As a precautionary measure, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has declared a holiday for schools in the district on both these days.

As per the forecast, the rains are likely to be accompanied with gusty winds and some areas are likely to receive rainfall of 200mm.

It may be recalled that Mangaluru had received a record rainfall of 368mm in a span of about six hours on May 29. The rains had led to flooding in several areas and had paralysed normal life in the district. Many lost their homes and some suffered heavy property damage. Some even lost their lives.
