Mangalore:There was panic at several parts of the city on September 20, Friday when people began to  smell an odour of leaked gas from somewhere. Sources said residents of several areas of Mangalore including Yekkur, Yeyyadi, Baikampady, Maryhill and Kulur had complained about the foul odour.

Rumours were even agog that there was a gas leakage at the MRPL plant while other sources said it might be due to a leakage at the Baikampady Industrial Area.

Meanwhile, MRPL was quick to issue a press communiqué stating that there was no gas leakage in its premises and that  Environment Department Engineers would soon be at work to identify the gas that had pervaded the atmosphere in the city.

Earlier, following floods of complaints, Deputy Commissioner N Prakash too asked MRPL to inspect its plant.

The Chief Fire Officer Varadarajan has kept all fire service personnel on alert. He said fire service vehicles had rushed to various parts of the city to detect any leakage but in vain.
