Moodbidri: Ganeshotsav was celebrated with great religious fervor at the Daregudde primary school near Daregudde gram panchayat. But after celebration all the waste has been dumped in a well belonging to the school. Locals irked over the garbage have complained to the officials, to clean it soon.

Last month Daregudde Ganeshotsav Samithi celebrated the festival in the school premises. It is learnt that all the waste including bottles has been dumped into a well, which is being used by the school children for drinking water. Even the foul smell is spreading the locality. The waste in the well is becoming a breeding ground for disease-carrying flies, mosquitoes and rats and harm the environment as well.

Even after Shirthady Health centre officer visited the spot and warned of children falling ill, no action has been taken yet. If the issue is not sorted out then definately students will have to face serious health problems.

Two years back the well was repaired with the help of district panchayat sanctioning Rs: 80,000. The water was purified as per the official’s advice. Even a pumpset has been installed.

School children solely depend on the well water. But they cannot use it as it has been polluted after waste was dumped.

Locals have already complained to the school SDMC and the panchayat officers. But no action has been taken. Locals said that, It is our duty to keep the school surroundings clean for the good of children and by polluting the school surroundings we are giving a wrong message to students.

Even the locals have found two liquor bottles near the well. So the locals have urged the concerned authority to look into this serious issue and resolve it soon.

Students are annoyed by the foul smell and it will also make students fall ill.

Hence the students and the locals have urged concerned people to keep the premises clean and make it garbage free.
