Fourth estate ensures upkeep of democracy: Police Commissioner

Mangaluru: Press Day celebration was held in Mangaluru Patrika Bhavan and to mark the occasion, a photo expo by some of the famous photo journalists was organised, on Friday, July 1 by Dakshina Kannada district Working Journalists’ Association and Mangaluru Press Club.

While the photo expo was inaugurated by District in-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai, a formal Press Day celebration was inaugurated by Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Chandrashekar.

Addressing the reporters, the top cop said that media, which is deemed as the fourth pillar of the democracy plays a vital role in maintaining the vibrancy of democracy.

It is due to the watchful eyes of the media that nobody is in the position to behave like a dictator. Speaking about the relationship that police and press share, he said it is surely a ‘love-hate relation’.

Roshni Nilaya Dean Prof Josline Lobo presented a talk on ‘social media, media and society’ and said that the inclination of people is fast shifting from conventional media towards social media or the digital media. “With more and more instances of misuse of social media hitting headlines, its credibility has been under scanner,” Prof Lobo said.

Senior Journalist Manohar Prasad, office-bearers of Press Club and Working Journalists Association were present.
