Moodbidri: In two separate incidents, five sisters met a watery grave in separate incidents at abandoned stone quarries at Moodbidri on Sunday July 20.



Stone quarries at Beluvai and Doomadachadavu are filled to the brim with water accumulating from incessant rains that the region has been experiencing in the last few days.
The deceased, Suraksha (7) and Sukanya (4), daughters of Suresh and Seetha of Maladi in Belivai, had gone to play near the quarry, and didnt realise the depth due to the flooding quarry. Consequently they drowned. They had been playing near the house, when they went missing. Not finding them, their mother went in search of them and found their bodies floating in the quarry.
In another incident on the same day, three sisters drowned at Doomadachadavu in a similar incident. The deceased are Vanisri (12), Meghasri (11) and Yakshitha (6), daughters of Vasu Shettigar and Seetha.
MLA Mohiuddin Bava who visited the family members at Doomadachadavu announced a compensation of Rs 4.5 lakh for the family.
Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has said that the district administration has issued a circular to fill all the abandoned quarry sites in the district.
The mines and geology officials will be directed to take measures to fill the abandoned quarry sites, he ordered.
