Surathkal: Five people were injured after a gang of nine persons barged into their residence at Janatha Colony in Surathkal and attacked them, on Monday evening.

The injured identified as Madhav Poojary (45), Anila (25), Shivaraj Devadiga (19), Madhu (20) and Janaki (50) have been undergoing treatment at a private hospital here.

The incident which occurred around 9 pm has left the region tense, however, the reason behind the attack has become a matter of debate.

While a section claims it could be due to personal reason, many state that it is due to a long pending fight over expansion of a local Madarasa that led to the fight.

It is said that the Janatha Colony stayed divided over the expansion of the local Madarasa. While residents belonging to one community insisted on expansion the other opposed it.

The same issue has been reportedly used as a reason for attack as handful of opponents, backed by right wing organisation went to file a case against the other group.

Surathkal police and KSRP platoon has been deputed outside the house as precautionary measure.

A case stands registered in Surathkal police station.
