Mangaluru: In a major move, Dakshina Kannada Stree Shakti district Co-operative Society was launched on Saturday, May 28, at Town Hall, in Mangaluru.
The first of its kind society brings under one roof members of various Sthree Shakthi groups from Chikkamagaluru, Udupi, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada.
Minister for Forest and Ecology Ramanath Rai launched the society by handing over the certificate of registration to Laalimani, the president of Dakshina Kannada Sthree Shakti Sanghagala Okkoota and the president of Belthangady taluk Shtree Shakti Sanghagala Okkoota.
The programme was inaugurated by Minister for Women and Child Welfare Umashree, who addressing the gathering lauded the move of bringing all the Stree Shakti groups under one single mother organisation.
“This is a model worth emulating everywhere. It is financial independent of women in true sense,”she said adding that the women entrepreneurs need not depend on banks for monetary aid, but can mobile their own resources henceforth, with the formation of the society.
“I have requested Minister for co-operatives Mahadeva Prasad to extend this project to even other districts,” she said adding that while the government is targeting at empowering women, it is also poised to bring in the transgender policy.
She said that allowance to unwed women above the age of 45 years too is in the pipeline.
Speaking about ambitious Samruddhi and Dhanashree Schemes of the government, she said that under Samruddhi scheme women fending for themselves as roadside vendors would get an interest-free loan of about Rs 10,000 while Dhanashree aims at helping HIV infected women to stand on their feet by providing monetary aid of Rs 50,000.
On the occasion she also symbolically inaugurated the solar lights in anganwadis by switching on the mini solar unit.
The program was presided over by the MLA of Mangaluru South constituency JR Lobo.
Minister for Fisheries Abhayachandra Jain, MLAs Shakunthala Shetty, Moihiudeen Bawa, MLC Ivan D’ Souza, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and others were present at the occasion.
