Mangaluru: Members of Mangaluru Bar Association held a protest at the court premises on Friday, July 15 demanding CBI enquiry into the case of suicide of Deputy Superintendent of Police M.K. Ganapathi. During the protest, President S.P. Chengappa said that Ganapathi had met him a week before putting an end to his life by committing suicide and expressed to him the problems he faced due to biased treatment at his workplace.

Speaking further, Chengappa said that Ganapathi had come to the city court premises with regard to a case to give evidence. During the visit, he had expressed the kind of mental agony he was going through and said that things were a little better in Mangaluru since he was working under Arun Chakaravathy, IG Western Range.

Chengappa said that Ganapathi spoke of the harassment by IPS officers A.M. Prasad and Pranob Mohanty and Minister K.J. George because of which he was very much demoralized. Prior to his suicide, he clearly said in a TV interview that the trio had harassed him and they would be responsible if anything would happen to him, said Chengappa.

“What Ganapathy’s stated before his death is a dying declaration. In the eyes of law that should be considered and FIR against George, and the two IPS officers A.M. Prasad and Pranob Mohanty should be filed,” added Chengappa.

Chengappa recalled instances of government officials being abused and attacked in the last few years and said that the case of Ganapthi should be handed over to CBI and investigation should be time bound as people don’t trust COD or CID.

Chengappa said that since litigants come from faraway places, advocates will not be absent from the court, but as a protest will wear black bands.
