Mangaluru: Condemning the repeated incidents of harassment against women and placing various other demands, the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) and Janavadi Women’s Organisation organised a “Jail Bharo” movement in the city on Friday, March 6.
The movement was held as part of International Women’s Day celebrations. Addressing the protesters, Janavadi Women’s Organisation President Jayanti B Shetty said, “Capitalists are conspiring to systematically eliminate the demands of women. Women’s rights are being snatched away by capitalists. Since the Narendra Modi-led Union government came to power in the country, harassment against women keeps on increasing and there is no security for women. As the government is protecting those accused of rape and murder, it has proved that it is against women”.
CITU General Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said, “Women are the first victims of any unpleasant incidents in society. Women’s empowerment is being hampered in recent days. Sexual harassment in the workplace is increasing day by day.”
CITU District Secretary J Balakrishna Shetty informed that anti-constitutional laws like CAA, NRC, and NPR do not only discriminate against the Muslim community, but it has been proved that the legislation is anti-women and anti-labour. “All women should oppose it and urge the government to scrap it,” he stressed.
Hundreds of women shouted slogans demanding implementation of Women’s Reservation Bill, equal wages for women, and to stop prevention of sexual harassment against women, during the protest.
