DRI sleuths seize foreign brand cigarettes worth Rs 10 lakhs;arrest 8

Mangalore:Officials of the Revenue Intelligence  Directorate have seized  1000 cartons of cigarettes worth Rs 10 lakhs  from eight passengers at the Mangalore International Airport on October 5, Saturday. They had arrived by an Air India Express flight from Dubai at 9.30 am.

Those arrested are Abdul Rahiman, Abdul Azeez, Abdul Khader, Abdul Gafoor, Mohammad Shafi, Mohammad Kunhi,  Abdul Rahiman and Habeeb. All are from Kasargod and in the age group of 25 and 30.

The accused have been entrusted to the custody of the Customs Department. The cigarettes  were found  in cartons  and were of four foreign brands. Each of the 1000 cartons had  20 cigarettes.

As per rules only  two cartons of foreign brand cigarettes could be brought by any air passenger.
