
Mangaluru: The officials attached to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a staff of Customs, in connection with helping a gold smuggler at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) on Tuesday, October 30.
The arrested has been identified as Ashwin. According to the sources, a resident of Mulleria in Kasargod district named Nizar Ahmed was arrested when he was alighting from a plane at MIA on September 20. While Nizar was arrested, DRI officials seized gold, estimated at around Rs 47 Lakh from his possession. Meanwhile, an official of MIA, Srikanth was also arrested as he was allegedly helping the accused Nizar to smuggle gold and gold estimated at around Rs 25 Lakh from Srikanth’s house. During further investigation, it came to light that a Customs staff Ashwin aided gold smuggler Nizar.
