Mangaluru: Senior litterateur and chancellor emeritus Dr B Vivek Rai launched the first Beary language calendar at the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy at its office here on Saturday February 6.

Addressing the gathering, Rai said that several languages being in use in the coastal belt of Karnataka, calendars of one language identifies and bridges gaps between other languages. He said that Beary speaking people calculate dates on the basis of the rotation of moon adding that such calendars help in strengthening communal ties.

Academy President Hanif in his keynote address said that the calendar will be developed in the upcoming days. He said that the academy has been working on several projects to foster the language.

Academy Registrar Umarabba, UP Upadhyaya, M Sharif, Yusuf Waqtar and Basheer Baikampady were present among others.
