Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited celebrated 16th World Milk day celebration in a rather different way by involving school children at Mangala Jyothi school at Vamanjoor on Wednesday, June 1 with the aim of spreading awareness about importance of milk and milk products.
The school students were given a chance to visit the unit in Kulshekar and get first hand experience of how milk is procured and processed at the unit. As many as 500 school children were given toned milk sachets and milk sweets too.

Flexi pack

On the occasion, DKMUL Managing Director B.V.Satyanarayana, and Union Chairman Raviraj Hedge said that the DKMUL within a week will launch ‘Trupti’ milk in flexi pack. The highlight of this product is that it can be preserved for 90 days without refrigeration.

Once launched, the DKMUL will be first in the state to have launched milk in flexi pack. The product will be made available in 500 ml packets and will cost Rs 20. A new product block has been set up at a cost of Rs 28 cr for this purpose at the dairy premises in Kulshekar.

The flexi plant has the capacity of producing 60,000 litres of ‘Trupti’ milk packets per day. They can process excess milk of about 10,000 litres procured every day by the union. ‘Trupti’ milk will hit the markets in Kerala, Goa, Jammu Kashmir and the north eastern states.

Sathyanarayana said that  World Milk Day was first started by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

He said that the World Milk Day celebration has helped in making people understand the goodness of milk and benefits of consuming the same.

“Milk is great source of all the healthy nutrients required by the body (calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iodine, iron, potassium, folates, vitamin A, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B12, protein, healthy fat etc). It provides instant energy to the body as it contains high quality proteins including both essential and non-essential amino acids and fatty acids,” he said.
