Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district administration held a celebration at Nehru Maidan to celebrate India’s 75th Independence Day. Angara, the Minister of Fisheries, Ports, and Inland transport who is also the District in-charge Minister, raised the flag and inspected the guard of honour.

“At the outset, I express my sincere tribute to all the leaders of our country who gave their lives in the independence struggle,” stated Angara addressing the gathering. He gave his wishes to everyone on the 75th Independence Day. “We are celebrating our platinum jubilee of our country’s independence. We have an opportunity to improve this country’s sovereignty. We should ask ourselves whether every individual in society experiences true freedom,” he added.

Angara further stated that, “Our culture is unmatched elsewhere on the planet. We are inspired by stories of freedom sacrifices. Foreign invaders, particularly the British, weakened this prosperous country. This invasion was also due to our weakness for infighting.”

He then emphasised on the Amar Sullia battle, which shook the British from Mangaluru to Kodagu between 1835 and 1837.

“Thousands of great leaders such as Balgangadhar Tilak, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, Zhansi Queen Laxmibai, Kittoor queen Chennamma, father of nation Mahatma Gandhi and Ullal Queen Abbakka helped raise the flag of independent India in the skies of this great country,” Angara said.

In his speech Angara praised the Union and State governments for different accomplishments. “It is not an exaggeration to say that we are blessed to have the leadership of Prime Minister Modi during this difficult time of coronavirus pandemic. Our own Karnataka administration, led by Chief Minister Bommai, is engaged in a variety of development projects.” he said.

He went on to say that the revolutionary idea of planting paddy in our district’s barren areas had instilled a new spirit in our farmers. “According to PM Modi’s dream, people in our district have greatly benefited from employment skills developed by people themselves,” he stressed.

“The district’s 12,56,821 residents have already been vaccinated against the deadly Covid-19.  For the same reason, the District Wenlock Hospital has been turned into a multi-specialty centre,” Angara remarked.

He also mentioned that necessary steps have been made to compensate and assist victims of natural calamities. Compensation is paid in accordance with the NDRF and SDRF rules.

A total of 584 projects have been completed with a grant of Rs. 1,659 lakh. 65 pedestrian bridges, 10 fish markets, 12 retainer walls, three theme parks, and 13 community centres have been built through the Coastal Development Authority.

“The Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan scheme provides BPL card holders with five kg of rice. In the months of May and June, migrant labourers were given 10 kg rice and groundnut as part of the Atmanirbhar scheme,” he stated. Angara further stated that the work on the Plastic Park is underway after receving a nod from the Union government.

District Rangamandira, Tulu Bhavana, Byari Bhavana, Konkani Bhavana, and Cultural Bhavana are being built on a cultural level. “A total of 39,590 litres of subsidy diesel were distributed to beneficiaries at a cost of Rs. 9 per litre. Various projects are taken under NAREGA, Swacch Bharath Mission, Black Water Management, Small Irrigation, and Smart City.”

“Let us all strive to be self-reliant and respected as we work to build Atmanirbhar Bharath. Finally, I urge the people of DK district to prepare for the third wave of Covid. Let us adhere to the guidelines set forth in this regard. Let us work to ensure that our next generation receives a strong education and culture “Angara remarked.

Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, President of the Coastal Development Authority Mattaru Ratnakara Hegde, MLA U.T. Khader, and other were present for the ceremony.

Parades were conducted by up to eight teams, including police, fire, and emergency services.
