Devotees assaulted by miscreants at Vamanjoor

Mangaluru: Communal tension prevailed on the intervening night of Saturday, after a section of miscreants allegedly belonging to the minority community reportedely pelted stones at devotees of another community, who were on their way to ‘datta peeta’. The incident took place at Ulaibettu, Vamanjoor in the outskirts of the city.

The police said that at least six persons have been injured and are undergoing treatment in a private hospital. They are: Vishwanath (29), Yashodhar (29), Manohar (30), Jagadish (32), Sowmya (26) and Babita (25).

The incident took place when a number of devotees were proceeding in their cars to visit ‘datta peeta’.

According to CCB inspector Valentine Dsouza, 28 persons have been arrested for stone pelting and situation is currently under control.

‘Arrested are innocent’

The family of two of the arrested speaking to Newskarnataka claimed that their family members who are arrested are innocent. ” They were sleeping here when the police came and took them away.”

The Hindu leaders have called for a protest at Vamanjoor junction at 10 am. One of the leaders said they will observe bundh on Monday.
