Moodbidri : The Bijapur borewell tragedy which claimed the life of four year old Akshatha has woken up many local administrative bodies which have already issued directives to cover the borewells, but not the Moodbidri TMC. The Moodbidri administration seems to be only inviting danger, thanks to the presence of several death traps in the form of open bore wells in the town.

One such death trap is in the heart of the town on the Moodbidri main road and is bothering locals since the past one year. If one open borewell is located on one edge of the road in front of the Krishnakatte, another borewell is located adjacent to it. It is the second borewell which is being used.
However the old borewell is left untouched and not even covered. It is located near the local auto park. Though autorickshaw drivers in order to avert danger had placed a stone over it, even that went missing within a few days.
A pump house near the borewell is ill-maintained to such an extent that the electric cables are dangling. There is an urgent need for the MESCOM and the TMC to rise to the occasion and take preventive measures.
A similar problem persists even near the Paper Mill Junction in Pranthya Ward, where there is also a school nearly. Here too a new borewell was constructed after the old went dry. However it has been left uncovered posting a perennial threat to the public and school children who pass that way. Close to this place is a storm water drain and whenever it rains the drain overflows in turn concealing the borewell. Anyone stepping into this place thinking it to be a levelled land is sure to land in trouble unless the TMC acts fast.
