Mangaluru: The district administration and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services have heightened surveillance at all three checkpoints along the Karnataka-Kerala border in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district following reports of a bird flu outbreak in Alapuzzha district, Kerala.
Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, informed News Karnataka that surveillance measures have been intensified at the Jalsur checkpoint in Sullia, Saradka checkpoint in Bantwal, and Talapady checkpoint in Ullal.
Three check-points have been established to disinfect vehicles transporting chickens from Kerala. Poultry farm owners have been instructed not to allow unfamiliar individuals into their premises. Furthermore, the department is distributing informational pamphlets outlining preventive measures to avert avian flu outbreaks in border regions.
Dr. Shetty highlighted the formation of rapid response teams tasked with culling birds in the event of flu cases being detected in Dakshina Kannada district. He noted that while the local market relies on Kerala, poultry chickens are not brought from Kerala to Dakshina Kannada. Vehicles transporting poultry and related products from the district to Kerala are sanitized at the border checkpoint upon their return.
Dr. Shetty cautioned that bird flu could spread to laborers working in poultry farms and meat processing industries, urging them to exercise vigilance.
